Why war and famine? Why Somalia?

It has been my dream for as long as I can remember to go into the field of medicine and become a nurse. I knew immediately that I wanted to research something pertaining to health. My initial instinct when deciding upon a research topic was to look into AIDS and malaria in Africa, as that is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about a international health issue. As I went deeper into my research, I found that Africa has many other health-related issues not related to disease. I soon discovered that one of the biggest health issues in Africa is the famine and food deprivation happening in the Horn of Africa; so I proceeded to question what was behind this starvation. From my research, it appeared that the areas with the most conflict were the areas with the highest amounts of famine. This information prompted my first question: To what extent is the famine in the Horn of Africa due to the war? However, the more I researched, the more I continued to see one countries name--Somalia. I continued looking into Somalia, and I found that Somalia is a country in the Horn of Africa where the famine was the most prominent. This is how I came upon my revised question, and instead of researching famine in the Horn of Africa, I was now specifically looking at Somalia.
